Il a pratiqu\u00e9, d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es soixante, l&rsquo;interdisciplinarit\u00e9 avant la lettre en reliant des domaines aussi divers que la zoologie et la physique des phases condens\u00e9es, en associant dans ses analyses les concepts de morphogen\u00e8se en biologie et de d\u00e9fauts dans les cristaux liquides. Lors d&rsquo;un s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Banyuls consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tude de cop\u00e9podes parasites, il d\u00e9couvre les superbes g\u00e9om\u00e9tries des carapaces d&rsquo;arthropodes, qui lui permettent de d\u00e9montrer l&rsquo;existence de phases cristallines liquides stabilis\u00e9es dans la mati\u00e8re vivante. Il \u00e9tend rapidement ce nouveau concept \u00e0 l\u00b9ADN des chromosomes de Dinoflagell\u00e9s. La cr\u00e9ation d&rsquo;une \u00e9quipe au sein du Laboratoire propre du CNRS d&rsquo;Ivry sur Seine lui permet d&rsquo;approfondir cette voie et en particulier de sugg\u00e9rer que l&rsquo;organisation de macromol\u00e9cules comme le collag\u00e8ne, la chitine ou la cellulose ob\u00e9issent \u00e0 des principes analogues.
